Safety and Security in Residence Halls
Hall Security Keys
Exterior doors of each residence hall are secured 24 hours a day. Upon check-in to a residence hall, a student's USF ID card is activated to unlock the exterior door to their assigned hall and they are issued appropriate keys to their living space.
University Police Department (UPD)
The USF St. Petersburg Police Department (UPD) is a professional, state-accredited law enforcement agency dedicated to serving and protecting the university community. UPD officers patrol the campus and surrounding areas 24/7 to ensure a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Emergency blue light phones are located throughout campus, providing a direct line to UPD for immediate assistance. These phones are equipped with automatic location indicators to help responders reach you quickly.
For emergencies, dial 911 or 3-4444 from any university phone.
UPD is located on the first level of the parking garage at 530 3rd St. South and serves as a key resource for campus safety and crime prevention.
Bicycle Security
There are numerous bike racks strategically located around campus that are available to the campus community for safer bike storage during all hours of the day. These bike racks are typically in more visible and lighted public locations to discourage a potential bike thief.
The City of St. Petersburg requires that all bicycles be registered and they have provided the following link to assist bike owners. Register your bike today.
More information on how to keep your bicycle safe can be found on the University Police Department website.
Hurricane Instructions
If a hurricane is approaching the St. Petersburg area, the Housing & Residential Education staff will make every effort to alert residents. Depending on the storm's path and whether the university decides to cancel classes or close, a follow-up decision may be made to close all on-campus housing and evacuate all residents. Learn more about hurricane safety on this page.
AEDs and Narcan Boxes
At USF Housing & Residential Education, the safety and well-being of our residents are our top priorities. To support our residents, we provide access to essential emergency response resources, including Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and Narcan Nasal Spray Boxes.
AEDs
AEDs (automated external defibrillators) are user-friendly, portable devices designed to analyze heart rhythms and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock to restore normal heart function during sudden cardiac arrest. Each AED is placed in a central, easily accessible location within residential communities, ensuring quick response in an emergency.
Narcan Emergency Response Boxes
Narcan Emergency Response boxes containing naloxone hydrochloride, a lifesaving medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose, can be found in every residence hall across campus. Each box is located in a common area of the hall that can be quickly accessed by staff and residents, if needed. Please see the list below for the exact location of the box in each residence hall.
Residents are encouraged to know the warning signs of an opioid overdose and review instructions on how to administer the Narcan Nasal Spray so they can properly respond if the need arises and they feel comfortable doing so. Instructions are also located above each Narcan Emergency Response box in each hall. We continue to encourage staff and residents to contact 911 for medical emergencies.
