Family Resources

Overview

One of our main aims at the Family Study Center is to provide materials and resources of direct use to families, and to connect families with other useful sites for parents.

Below you will find helpful information, including advice for parents talking to small children about the aftermath of storms and other traumatizing news stories, and a resource guide listing services to Pinellas families with infants and toddlers showing early adjustment difficulties and developmental delays. You’ll also find family-friendly publications designed to help families work together for their children.

For a terrific resource specific to the needs of expectant parents and parents of young children birth to age 3, visit the website of ZERO TO THREE.

RESOURCES

Helping Children Cope in the Aftermath of Hurricanes and Other Traumatizing Events

Experiencing two major storms in less than two weeks can negatively impact anyone's mental health. At the Family Study Center and our Infant-Family Center, we stand ready to support Pinellas County families needing emotional support following stressful and traumatizing life events. All Pinellas County families who are caring for at least one child aged newborn through 5 years old can contact our Infant-Family Center to receive free mental health supports, services and referrals to help them cope with distress impacting their young children. To set up an appointment or to learn more about ways in which we can help, please call (727) 873-4876. Additional hurricane-related mental health resources available to parents with older children include:

  • The Disaster Distress Helpline provides continuous, free crisis counseling to anyone who calls or texts 1-800-985-5990.
  • Care About Me is Pinellas County’s access line for mental health, substance use and addiction services. Residents can call or text 1-888-431-1998 to speak with a behavioral health specialist.
  • The 988 Suicide Prevention Lifeline will also provide critical assistance and support. Those in need should call or text 988.

Besides coping with the stress created by hurricanes, the organization ZERO TO THREE has assembled information for families who need help coping with violence and other tragic events. These free resources offer guidance to parents, caregivers, and the professionals who support them so they can help infants and young children grieve and process violence and traumatic experiences. With our colleagues at ZERO TO THREE we are committed to ensuring that every child grows up healthy, safe, and loved. Helpful information can be found here: Terrorism and War Sharpen Focus on Traumatic Effects of Violence on Babies and Toddlers; Resources Available to Help Children, Families.

When community violence strikes closer to home, there are additional resources families can access. Parents of young children are able to bring and discuss issues of concern at the Family Study Center’s Parent Café series offered in collaboration with New Visions for the Well. The City of St. Petersburg’s Not My Child campaign offers programming, support and resources to local families.

Contact information can be found within the accompanying flyer. Most agencies provide support not just for children but for their parents as well.

Charting the Bumpy Road of Coparenthood Book
Dr. James McHale’s book on coparenting, “Charting the Bumpy Road of Coparenthood”. The book is written for both parents and professionals, and summarizes findings from a large, federally-funded project that studied families as they navigated the transition to new parenthood. “Charting the Bumpy Road of Coparenthood” outlines how parents’ thoughts, expectations, and relationships prior to the baby’s birth affect how they coordinate together with one another as they begin to coparent their infants and young children. Parents of young children will see much of themselves in the interview excerpts and advice offered by parents, for parents.
